Digitizing Human Rights, Archiving Activism

Updated: Aug 25, 2018

A discussion of several projects promoting ethics and activism with technology as well as archiving of activism. Speakers included Alexa Koenig (UC Berkeley Human Rights Center), Anat Biletzki (B’Tselem), Peter Manning (Northeastern) and members of the Charlie Hebdo Archives at Harvard University (Professor Virginie Greene).

Results: Thanks to his attending this and other Mellon events, Prof. Jeff Rubin (BU History), now leading a series of faculty discussions under the title “Seeing and Not Seeing”, developed a conversation with Professor Floyd about activism and digital technology. He organized the visit of another human rights speaker, Professor Jason De Leon (a MacArthur award winner, Director of the Undocumented Migration Project, University of Michigan). De Leon spoke about book The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail (University of California Press, 2015) and offered a photo-journalistic, historical, and ethnological account of his experiences. Future discussions and events with the “Seeing and Not Seeing” group and Professor Floyd are planned, co-sponsored by the BU Humanities Foundation, for spring 2019.

We are grateful to the French Consul of Boston for Co-Sponsoring this Event.
